Season log

What you sowed and planted and how it came up, what water the garden got each week, and what you harvested. Everything you type stays in this browser.

Sowing and planting

One row per sowing or planting. Germination percent = seedlings that came up / seeds sown x 100. Essential for a first season.

Weekly water

One row per week. The soil check is the finger test two inches down, before you water. Optional for a first season.

Harvest

One row per picking. Weigh or count the same way all season so the totals mean something. Essential for a first season.

How to use these sheets

  • One row per sowing. Germination percent = seedlings that came up / seeds sown x 100. A low number from an old packet is a reason to test before the next sowing (Module 7).
  • One row per week of water. Rain from a gauge or a nearby weather station, gallons from the water calculator or your own count, and the soil check before you watered.
  • One row per harvest. Weigh or count the same way all season. The totals feed the season review in Module 12.
Fictional example

The example rows come from the Okafor garden (fictional): 28 of 40 lettuce seeds came up from a two-year-old packet (70 percent); a week with 0.3 in of rain needed 27.9 gal on 64 sq ft; a tomato harvest from the east bed is logged with the shade noted, so the season review can compare the two beds.

Limits

The log records what happened in one season in one place. It cannot say why a crop did poorly, or whether a variety will do better next year; one season is provisional evidence. Weather records, a soil test and a diagnosis from your extension service each settle a different part of that question.
